Final Tux
Looks great 🙂 Thank you for sharing
A couple more
It’s amazing 🙂
this is the start – first layers
Already amazing. 🙂 You can add some light reflection over the eyes – even if it’s not there in the reference photo – to make it even more alive
Doesn’t mouth look flat and wrong – and where for the eye highlights? Top right
It can be top-right, just make sure to make in the same place for both eyes. The part around mouth is still pale, I thought it’s not finished yet 🙂 you can darken it a bit. Maybe you don’t know about it, but I have launched website with free tools https://www.freetoolio.net/ There is a tool Shadows & Highlights Isolator (among other useful tools for artists) where you can check which parts of the reference photo are the brightest and which are the darkest. This way you can make sure that you darken the white fur that is not much illuminated as trying to figure out just by looking at the image can be tricky. Because there is a huge difference between highlight and highlight 🙂 Please let me know if it helps.
I am trying to do this relatively basic tuxedo, and i just cannot figure out what is wrong. The proportions seem correct, but the mouth, etc. seems flat and odd. I dont know if i overdid the different greys and need to simplify it to fluff it up. Can you let me know what you think to see if i can save it? Are the eyes too birght?
Hi! I just finished this one and i liked the way it turned out, but i am going to need some tough love on this next one i will send.
You did a great job with this one. Bright fur is very hard to draw, but you nailed it
doodle
hi! Quick help question. what can i do to soften the hairs (took a lot of time and colors to get them like this, but now i feel like they are too distinct). Blending stick? Burnish a bit with a white?
I always use a wax colorless blender by Prismacolor. Not sure that you have it. Maybe try with white or any other pencil you have used here. Looking great so far. I like the area around the mouth 🙂 and the eyes are mesmerizing
bulldog reference
Another request.
wow this is perfect!
I need to watch a couple of your videos. The one i watched on my lunch break looked like you were pressing hard on the skin tone. Looks very hard
I usually press hard to burnish these wax-based colored pencil. Please comment under the video you watch so I can answer there 🙂
going to try drawing a human. Terrified!
Yeah, that’s much more difficult 🙂 Can’t wait to see
i like parts of the final product
Looks amazing!!! Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to see your next one 🙂
progress. I seem to continue to muddle the fur – i think too many layers.
Looking great too me. I see you use many colors and that ads to realism 🙂 keep it up
his name is tosh
Looks amazing already 🙂 You draw a lot 🙂 the eye is spot on
this will be my toughest challenge yet!
close to final
It’s amazing 🙂 Thank you for the update 🙂
Fat cat reference
A new one started
Wow this is amazing. The eyes are more alive than on the reference photo 🙂 Great work
I feel like i am taking up this whole webpage. Can you delete all my stuff so it is not so messy for you?
What? It’s not messy at all. I love comments. I wish more members would leave comments, but they are usually shy and ashamed of their drawings. So, don’t keep your drawing processes to yourself 🙂 Please, keep posting.
dog
pirate dog
wow already looking great 🙂
Started a new one eyed dog with a cloudy eye.
still looks like AI drew it. I think they eyes may be a touch too big.
Maybe start again if you don’t like it? 🙂 That’s what I do sometimes 🙂
reference
start.
Looks pretty good to me 🙂 You can try to darken the fur where is to bright, or maybe to create bigger light reflection over the eyes, or to highlight the iris a bit?
What i have done is incorporate a lot more french greys since this picture which has softened the white lightbulb colors into a warmer look. It is starting to work a bit. I think the eyes are almost too electric. I want to dull them down a bit but there is SOOO much color there – i started with a bunch of blues and then with colored pencil pick, it suggested NO blues and only greys!! i will work on the eyes like you suggested.
Yes, French Grays seem to be dominating. It’s like the color of your paper, so you have to work towards the brightest and darkest areas.
Need your expertise again! I am a couple hours into this new one and it doesnt look lifelike. It almost looks animated.. What am i missing here?
i cannot seem to photograph these things well.
This looks great!!! I love the colors. The photograph is also much better than your previous ones, so you are getting better at it too 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Great job!
i grabbed what i thought were the right colors. boy was i wrong! I am going back tomorrow to get a few more from the store using the pick app.
Looking great so far 🙂
New attempt.
Jasmina, is there a copy machine that can make copies of these types of drawings? I typically give them away but i would like to keep a couple, and photographs do not seem to work well for me.
Yes, there is a scanner that usually comes with a printer together, 2 in 1. I always scan my drawings because same here, to take a photo of drawings is a struggle.
Should i do that blend of the cheek in the white area shown here as i did with the other folds? Check out the reference photo and let me know. Thanks!! after that i am starting something new.
Yes, you can try. If you won’t like it, you can always work over it with white again. Can’t wait to see your next project 🙂
Feels like i am getting better. Getting more control considering 99 percent of the time i draw with a mechanical HB pencil!
Of course 🙂 That’s because you draw every day. Can’t wait to see your next one
I think that helped. I think this one is done.
Yes, the folds are gone 🙂 looks much better. You nailed it! What it feels like now when you see that your effort paid off?
or a warm 30?
I’d go with 50, but try the one you want because not sure that the drawing looks the same as in the picture I see
or a blending stick. . .
So just take a lighter gray pencil and kind of blend out the “lines” separating the folds?
Yes, just darken them. Don’t worry, you can always go over with lighter pencils if you change your mind, so to say to “undo” it.
I think the folds of the flesh around face are too intense.
You can just go over with a gray pencil to darken the highlights and flatten it. The fur is stunning 🙂 Great job!
For whatever reason, it is not photographing well. and it shows up on this page enormous! I am going to finish the balance of it and then maybe we can see what is needed. Reference photo attached.
Maybe the white colored pencil is reflecting light when you take a photo. Yes, we will see when the whole drawing is finished how these values relate to each other.
Obviously a ton more to do, but i am not liking to softness of the fur. I dont want to blend it, burnish it, etc.,
omg don’t touch it 😀 it looks amazing! The softness of the fur is spot-on to me. Are you using Warm Grays? Maybe just darken slightly the highlights around the nose, but maybe it’s just the brightness of the photo, so I am not sure. I love that you draw regularly 🙂 thanks for sharing
Just starting – using a different photo. The hair on this cat’s fact is so short. real short strokes?
Wow, the eyes are beautiful. Did you use PenPick to get pencil suggestions? Yes, here you should draw short strokes, lots of work 🙂 but will pay off
should the grey cat be on white paper or can i use the toned gray. I have both.
If the cat has some white furs too, I often use gray paper because it emphasizes the bright fur. You should definitely try to draw on BOTH 🙂
I will use whatever it requires. French grey was referenced, many warm greys, metallic silver, a violet, etc.
These are all very similar colors. So, you can use 2-3 that shows up the most.
Do you have any grey fur videos? I have been searching.
I have the gray cat here and the video is narrated: https://www.coloredpenciltutor.com/kid-with-2-cats/ it’s on white paper.
I think i will just need to wait for the day you do a british shorthair! I just used the pencil identifier and it was about 20 different colors!!!!
Which pencils do you want to use? If Prismacolor, Warm Grays are the good choice. Which pencils PenPick suggested? It’s also good to use more colors so the drawing won’t look flat.
I am going to do this one. I need to run it through that link you sent.
The reference photo is great. Do you want to draw it on white paper?
Final.
Looks great 🙂 What you will draw next? 🙂
i have a picture of a pair of brown eyes behind an orchid. I need to use the software that tells me what colors i need.
You can upload it to the PenPick that you can access as a member of Colored Pencil Tutor. It suggests 3 brands of colored pencils and the tool is on this page: https://www.coloredpenciltutor.com/penpick/ Can you upload your image here?
last post, i promise.
Looking great, really. Why last post? We want to see more from you, please. After this one, you can try to draw the same drawing again. It might turn out even better since you got experience with this one. Can’t wait to see more from you 🙂 So, keep working and keep posting 🙂 Thank you
Revised drawing using grid
Looking great. The highlight on the black fur is spot on. I really love the eyes 🙂 They are alive 🙂 Keep it up (y)
I threw this one out too. I was trying to put his face on your angle of the tutorial, so i could follow a long. I am going to do the grid and use my photo. Good news is i have done so many by now i think i can handle it!
It’s ok. The more you practice, the better it will become. It’s very good that you see that something is off so you can try again.
Still working on the face shape.
wow this one is much much better. The eyes are mesmerizing. Very good job so far. Thank you 🙂
Yes, i threw out the one that was close to completed and re-drew the one with just the eyes completed. I am essentially putting his features at the angle that your photo was shot at.
How’s it going? Waiting for the next update 🙂
actual cat
additional pic
Hi! I am using this tutorial while substituting my friend’s actual cat. I used your original dimensions but something went very wrong (see semi completed one). I threw it out and have started the one attached with a free hand sketch with the eyes completed, but i still feel like something is off – cannot figure it out. I tried to attach three photos to this.
Hi. It’s not proportional enough. The cat in my drawing has a different pose and it’s photographed from a different angle. Have you tried a grid method? You can place grid over your photo at http://www.gridraw.net website for free. Then draw the grid on your paper and sketch it out that way. I have many tutorials, even written ones with pictures, on how to sketch with grid method.
